Double elimination set procedure

This process is explained here for the benefit of both staff volunteers but also new players to in person events.

  • A Bracket Runner instructs two players to play a set against each other at an open station
  • Before they sit down, players must agree to who gets player 1 side or player 2 side. Disagreements are settled with Rock Paper Scissors (RPS)
  • If playing on console, Player 1 should go to the console menu and disconnect any existing wireless controllers that are paired.
    • If Player 1 forgets, it is on Player 2 to remind them to check
  • Return to the game and it’s offline Versus Mode
  • It is recommended that players check their button assignments here in the event the game does not have a method at the Character Selection
  • Enter Character Selection and both players pick their character(s) from the select screen
    • Immediately before anyone selects a character, either player may request a Double Blind Pick. It has to be before anyone selects a character. Process for this below
    • Player 1 decides their character(s) and whispers or writes it to the Bracket Runner
    • Player 2 then decides their character(s) and whispers or writes it to the Bracket Runner
    • Player 1 then selects their character(s), with the Bracket Runner using the information provided earlier to keep them honest
    • Player 2 then selects their character(s), with the Bracket Runner using the information provided earlier to keep them honest
  • Players play out the first game of the set
  • After each game in a set ends, the loser of that game has the option to change their character(s) and/or stage prior to the next game in the set
    • The winner of that game is not allowed to change character(s) unless specifically stated in the game’s specific tournament rules OR they had selected ‘Random’
  • If the winner of that game had selected ‘Random’, they must reselect ‘Random’
  • If there are any game specific rules in between games, they apply here
  • A max of 1 minute is allowed between games of a set. This 1 min can be used as players see fit (following event rules at least)
  • Players play out the set until one reaches the number of required games to win the set (2 or 3 games usually, specified in rules)
  • If a game ends in a draw, it is redone and the score remains unchanged for the players
  • Once a winner is decided, players unplug their controllers, stand up from the station, and report to the Bracket Runner, who will update the bracket accordingly
